But, it all comes down to the timing when switching directions, and the rhythm of the jumping can make you default to switching directions either when you land or when you jump, which will not work. I found out that when you land on the ground and press jump again, the air strafe direction (holding A or D) has to be matched with your mouse direction. I watched multiple guides and they all more or less explained the same things, so I was very confused and started experimenting. After looking at Reddit comments, YouTube comments, and basically anywhere people were talking about this, it was easy to come to the conclusion that most players got stuck here as well. I got the solid three hops in one direction down, but as soon as I switched directions, all of my momentum was lost. I decided to take the dive and start learning to bhop last night.
